This picture of our house clearly shows changing architectural styles as additions were built.

The middle section, with its smaller door and window, replaced a late 17th or early 18th century wooden cabin. It is typical of the one-room dwellings that were being built in southeastern Pennsylvania at the turn of the century.

The Western wing (picture left) was the first stone section, built in 1757, it originally connected to the wooden cabin. It’s pedimented cantilever hood over the door and symmetrically placed sash windows shows the impact of the new European style of Renaissance classicism on domestic housing in the Delaware valley.

The middle section was rebuilt in stone when a second storey was added before the Revolution..

The East wing (picture right) was added in 1788.The door is recessed in a formal, pedimented outer frame. Such flat, classically derived pediments typically replaced cantilevered hoods over Delaware Valley doorways after 1750.
