Hessian Weekend

The Hessian Weekend activities in the southern part of the Park tie into our family history.

The Hessians were a fierce fighting force allied with the British during the Revolutionary War. At that time, Charles and Emanuel Pidcock were in the local militia and also operated Durham boats at Wells Ferry from Lambertville, NJ. Ferries were a prime target for the British, seeking to cross the river, December 1776. At our first reunion, in 1913, George M. Pidcock, told the story passed down from his grandmother, Mary Godown (8/4/1784-7/22/1876) that Pidcock NJ property was confiscated by the English, “but the Hessians did the work.” The Park will tell about Hessian camp life during the War through food, lectures, drill reenactments and tours of the McKonkey Ferry Inn where Hessian prisoners were housed after the Battle of Trenton.
